This route demands that you
are in good physical shape, your body prepared
to scale one of the most striking, snow covered
mountains in the Inca region. Accompanying
the mountain is the breathtaking and unusual
Andean geography. We pass through numerous
Andean villages, where we will have plenty
of contact with the villagers, and our trek
is accompanied by alpacas, llamas, and incredible
amounts of nature. We reach an altitude of
6384 m. above the Palomani Pass.
We encounter temperatures on the trip that
are below freezing, so we recommend bringing
warm, quality clothing.
We will be using pack mules and horses for
practically the entire trek, and these will
be led by their owners.
Day 1 – Cusco – Tinki
– Upis
We leave Cusco early, 6 A.M., and travel for
6 hours to reach the village of Tinki (3800
m.). We take in awe inspiring, high Andean
countryside as we journey along the path connecting
the villages of Ccatca, Ocongate, Tinki, and
others. We cross the Qosqoqawarina Pass (4200
m.), the dividing point of the city of Cusco
and eat our lunch at the Tinki camp. For 3
more hours, we march on to the feet of Mount
Ausangate (4200 m.). We eat dinner in the
camp and sleep in tents.
Day 2 – Upis – Hatunpucacocha
After breakfast, we start our 4 hour ascent
to the APU, or god of protection, of the city
of Cusco, Mount Ausangate. Veering to the
right, we see the Arepa Pass (4900 m.) and
a spectacular spot where you sometimes catch
sight of vicuñas, vizcachas, and deer,
as well as other animals. On our descent,
we see Lakes Yanacocha and Uchuypucacocha.
Lunch is camping food. In the afternoon, we
begin the 1 hour trek towards Lake Hatunpucacocha
(4600 m.), set at the foot of Mount Ausangate.
We eat dinner in the camp and sleep in tents.
Day 3 – Hatunpucacocha –
Uchuyfinaya
After an easy descent and a pleasant night
camping out in an utterly peaceful environment,
we begin trekking through moraine (glacier
produced rock deposits) and past lakes at
the foot of the mountain. It is very cold
as we cross the first pass, Apacheta (4990
m.), from where we can see the turquoise waters
of Lake Ausangate-Cocha, a great place for
trout fishing. After a break, we start the
2 hour upwards trek to the Palomani Pass.
This is the spot where we see the snows of
Mount Santa Catalina and Mount Chilenita,
both towering over 6000 m. We descend to Yanapampa
and eat lunch. After 2 more hours of trekking
in the afternoon, we reach either the town
of Uchuifinaya or the Finaya Hacienda. We
eat dinner and sleep in tents.
Day 4 – Uchuifinaya –
Lake Comercocha
This is the day when we trek through a large
valley full of wetlands, marshes, and plenty
of alpacas and llamas, which play the starring
role in the best this place has to offer.
We trek until arriving at the small town of
Jampa, an area generally populated by herders
and a few indigenous people. We continue descending
to Tijlacocha, where we might stop for lunch,
depending on the time, or we might trek on
to the Jampa Pass (5000 m.) and have lunch
later. It is another 1 and a half hours to
Qomercocha (4600 m.), but there we eat dinner
and sleep in tents.
Day 5 – Lake Comercocha –
Paccchanta
After breakfast, we start another 3 hour descent
on the trail that divides the tiny village
of Paccchanta (4200 m.) in two. Yet, the prize
awaits us as we come across the hot springs,
excellent for having a break and taking an
easy day of it after such a difficult journey.
There, we eat dinner and sleep in tents.
Day 6 – Paccchanta –
Tinki – Cusco
After our last breakfast, we begin the 3 hour
trek to the village of Tinki. Our car awaits
us there, and transfers us to the city of
Cusco, a 6 hour drive. We eat lunch on the
road.
