Community:
ATALAYA
Atalaya is the third largest community in Kcosñipata.
It is located 10 km from Pillcopata, the district capital
and program headquarters, 20 minutes by car. Situated
on the Alto Madre de Dios River, on the border between
the districts of Cusco and Madre de Dios, it is a starting
point for boating expeditions into the reserved part
of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. While the community sees
a significant number of tourists, they are just passing
through. The families are made up of agriculturalists
(mainly producing bananas) and those working with the
tourist agencies as porters, boat drivers. etc.
School:
The school currently has around 30 students who are
split into two classrooms and taught by two teachers.
The teachers are planning to implement their own program
of mini businesses for the older children in order for
them to learn skills such as care of small animals.
Specific Needs:
Due to the large number of tourists, English is a priority
for both the children and adults in order for them to
increase their job opportunities and earning potential.
The volunteer could arrange English classes for the
adults in the evenings.
Volunteers could also encourage the development of cottage
tourist industries such as making and selling local
handicrafts. |

Community:
PILLCOPATA
Pillcopata, the largest community in Kcosñipata,
is referred to as the door to the jungle, and a large
number of tourists pass through it daily. Many of the
inhabitants come from other parts of Peru, and the villagers
from nearby communities come almost daily to the market
to sell and buy goods. The project headquarters is located
in Pillcopata. The community has many hotels, restaurants
and a health centre. It is also equipped with public phones
and Internet access. School:
The school has around 500 students. Volunteers will be
working primarily with the English teacher, with work
in other classes depending on the skill set of the volunteer.
Specific Needs:
Due to the large number of tourists English is a priority
for both the children and adults in order for them to
increase their job opportunities and earning potential.
The volunteer could arrange English classes for the adults
in the evenings.
In addition to holding English classes in the evenings,
volunteers could teach classes in such subjects as art,
music, theatre, conservation, etc. |

TUPAC AMARU
Tupac Amaru is located 8 km from Pillcopata, the district
capital and program headquarters, approximately 45 minutes
by car. Situated on the left bank of the Kcosñipata
River it is one of the most populated communities with
around 30 families (200 individuals), all involved in
agriculture and coca production. School:
The school currently has around 50 students separated
into two classrooms and taught by 2 teachers.
Specific Needs:
Due to its relative proximity to Pillcopata and the fact
that most of the community spends a significant amount
of time in Pillcopata, English is a priority for both
the children and adults in order for them to increase
their job opportunities and earning potential. The volunteer
could arrange English classes for the adults in the evenings.
