INFORMATION ABOUT THE COMMUNITIES OF KOSNIPATA VALLEY

  Community of Pilcopata

Community: ATALAYA
Atalaya is the third largest community in Kcosñipata. It is located 10 km from Pillcopata, the district capital and program headquarters, 20 minutes by car. Situated on the Alto Madre de Dios River, on the border between the districts of Cusco and Madre de Dios, it is a starting point for boating expeditions into the reserved part of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. While the community sees a significant number of tourists, they are just passing through. The families are made up of agriculturalists (mainly producing bananas) and those working with the tourist agencies as porters, boat drivers. etc.

School:
The school currently has around 30 students who are split into two classrooms and taught by two teachers. The teachers are planning to implement their own program of mini businesses for the older children in order for them to learn skills such as care of small animals.

Specific Needs:
Due to the large number of tourists, English is a priority for both the children and adults in order for them to increase their job opportunities and earning potential. The volunteer could arrange English classes for the adults in the evenings.
Volunteers could also encourage the development of cottage tourist industries such as making and selling local handicrafts.
