On this four day trek, we will
discover the Inca Trails as they move westward.
This spirit of this trek follows our team’s
compulsion to explore, find, and retrace the
ancient, western directed Inca Trails.
We travel on them to a place electrified
with importance and symbolism, Mantto. This
was the gathering and launching point for
the different populations that migrated westwards
as it is represented on several rock paintings
in the area that we will visit.
As a postscript to this trip, we visit the
village of Lares, capital of the valley and
a place well known for its hot springs that
we have the chance to enjoy.
Day 1 – Cusco – Acchahuata
– Lagunas
We set out early from Cusco in our car and
travel for 3 hours across the Andes to later
arrive at the town of Acchahuata via the Amparaes
Pass (4600 m.). We eat lunch and then visit
the knitters who, by their ancestral and enviable
skill, produce works of art using alpaca wool
and natural dyes. We start the trek again,
this time a moderate climb to an altitude
of 4150 meters, passing through several indigenous
settlements along the way until we reach the
Lagunas camp, 4000 m. We eat dinner in the
camp and sleep in tents.
Day 2 – Lagunas – Cancana
We set our very early and trek along the old,
Inca canal that connects the village of Cancana.
Our route carries us along high Andean areas
that, as we pass through, reveal to us a large
amount of Incan ruins and vestiges.
We sleep that night at the ancient, Incan
town of Cancana, the site of different archeological
remains (main square, Incan alleys, wells,
etc.). We eat dinner in the camp and sleep
in tents.
Day 3 – Cancana – Mantto
From Cancana, we begin walking the
trail that leads to Mantto, a mythical gathering
point for the Incas fleeing westward from
the Spanish Conquistadors. We pass easily
visible condor nesting sites, highly symbolic
rock art, and truly beautiful countryside.
We camp here, close to the conjunction of
the Yanatile and Lares rivers.
Day 4 – Lares – Cusco
Very early in the morning, our car transfers
us to Lares, the heart of the valley and a
place famous for its hot springs. We take
a break from our arduous journey, eat lunch,
and get back on the road to Cusco, a 3 hour
trip.
